National Book Foundation: Why did you write this book?
Naomi Klein: In the months after Trump’s election and before his inauguration, there was a way in which a lot of analysts were treating Trump like a visitor from outer space. Every time he did or said anything Trumpian, the emphasis was on how unprecedented it was. I was really worried that this was letting the culture and systems that produced his presidency off the hook. So I wanted to map some of the roads that lead to this moment, because I think if we don’t have that map, we’re lost. I also wrote the book because I’m very concerned about how this administration would exploit a major national crisis – a terrorist attack, a financial crisis, a major natural disaster. We’re seeing some of it now with the hurricanes, especially in Puerto Rico. Crisis exploitation is a phenomenon I have being studying for a long time, so I wanted to give readers some tools to prepare.
Foundation: What’s your favorite bookstore or library?
Klein: A small shop in Toronto called Another Story. I’m extremely lucky to have this store in my neighborhood and I pop in all the time. They are so good and fast with special orders that I’ve mostly weaned myself off mail order. The entire staff is deeply committed to promoting diverse voices, particularly Indigenous, Caribbean and queer authors. They have a wonderful children’s section – it’s half the store – and my son is a regular, he knows all the staff by name. They work diligently to make sure that kids from all backgrounds see themselves represented. They also put on great events with authors like Arundhati Roy and Roxane Gay. Another Story’s founder, Sheila Koffman, died very recently and it’s been a tremendous loss to our city’s literary community. But I have faith in the store’s staff to keep this beautiful institution alive.

In No Is Not Enough, Naomi Klein embraces a lively conversation with the reader to expose the forces behind Trump's success and explain why he is not an aberration but the product of our time--Reality TV branding, celebrity obsession and CEO-worship, Vegas and Guantanamo, fake news and vulture bankers all rolled into one. And she shares a bold vision, a clear-eyed perspective on how to break the spell of his shock tactics, counter the rising chaos and divisiveness at home and abroad, and win the world we need.
